So this is the inside of an avalanche

Avalanches are very common in Alaska.  So common that we read numerous stories over the winter about people getting trapped, injured or dying from them. Because I barely left the office/house this winter, I have no personal experience being in or even seeing an avalanche. (Fingers crossed for next winter).  But this guy has a video of being caught in an Alaska avalanche.

It looks horrifying and now I need to buy a backpack with a balloon inside. Aka an avalanche airbag.

Winter: the end is near, so let’s take a Roadtrip!

With the weather finally warming up – 45 degrees during the day! -, we decided to take one last road trip to our favorite winter hideaway.

After packing the Subaru, we set out on a 2 1/2 hour drive North from the condo in Anchorage to the Susitna River Lodge in beautiful, quaint Talkeetna, Alaska.

Sarah's in the drivers seat this trip.

Aside from the usual reasons for getting out of town, We love going to Talkeetna  to Snow-machine the Susitna River and Powerline trails. (We first experienced the joy of 35mph in back-country over Thanksgiving 2010 with Sarah’s Dad.)

This time, Sarah led the way:

Nothing sexier than a woman on a (snow) machine.

Ice cold fearlessness in those eyes.

Followed by me:

I dutifully follow the leaders.

And the obligatory “couple-y” photo to make you all say “awwww” . . . or barf.

Verdict - Snow machining is awesome and our favorite winter sport.

And a trip to Talkeetna would not be complete without a visit to the Denali Brewing Company and our friend Rian.

brewer and buddy, here's Rian everybody.
